About the Physician

Dr. Cody Harlan, MD

"My practice revolves around two things - the doctor and the patient. Everything else is noise."

Dr. Cody Harlan is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, and Kansas City's most experienced arthroscopic hip surgeon. With over 3,500 hip arthroscopies performed, he is widely regarded as one of the top hip arthroscopists in the country.

He treats conditions of the hip, knee, and shoulder - with a particular focus on hip preservation: keeping your joint working through targeted treatment rather than defaulting to replacement.

Patients travel from across the United States - and as far as Alaska - to seek his care. Whether you're a competitive athlete or someone who just wants to get back to daily life without pain, this practice was built for you.

Born and raised in Nebraska, Dr. Harlan completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before earning his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. He and his wife have been married for over 25 years and are the parents of three grown children.

In His Own Words

“I wanted to build a practice that was truly patient-centered, and in today’s model of medicine, that’s becoming increasingly rare. I got tired of not having a say in how or when patients were scheduled. I got tired of running an hour behind while a waiting room full of frustrated people stared at the clock. The patient’s time matters just as much as the doctor’s. Somehow, that’s been forgotten.”

“When it comes to my athletes, my commitment doesn’t end at the consultation. I want to hear directly from them, and from their trainers and coaches, throughout their entire journey, from first appointment through full return to sport. After watching my own daughter struggle to find continuity in her care at the D1 level, it became clear: athletes deserve a doctor who stays invested from beginning to end.”

The Difference

Why This Practice Is Different

Kansas City's only boutique orthopedic practice. Here's what that means for you.

You Always See Dr. Harlan

Not a big group practice where you schedule with one doctor and see another. At every appointment, every time, you see Dr. Harlan personally - no PAs, no nurse practitioners, no substitutes.

24/7 Coverage

Dr. Harlan covers his patients around the clock, every day of the year. If you have a concern after hours, you're not left waiting. It's still him directing your care.

Hip Preservation First

The goal is always to preserve your hip - through targeted treatment, therapy, or minimally invasive surgery - before considering replacement. This matters especially for younger, active patients.

Back to Sport Faster

Thanks to innovative surgical technique and rapid recovery protocols, athletes return to sport in approximately 90 days after hip surgery - significantly faster than the traditional timeline.

What Patients Are Saying

Real stories from real patients.

★★★★★

I can truly say that Dr. Harlan changed my life. I have always been a very active person and I was to a point where that activity was nearly impossible without debilitating pain. In 2024, I had both hip FAI correction surgeries done and I am now completely pain free. He takes time to explain your specific issue and what it will take to correct it. Great experience!

I am a repeat customer from Alaska. I had my hip (torn labrum) and a year later, my shoulder (rotator cuff) repaired after a Doc in AK misdiagnosed it. The entire experience was first class. Dr. Harlan is an excellent communicator who takes his time with you and is a straight shooter. He is experienced, confident, and knows his stuff. Go see Dr. Harlan and get your repair done right.

We made the trip from Tulsa, Oklahoma to have Dr. Harlan perform my hip surgery, and I truly could not have asked for a better experience. His team was incredible from start to finish. So thankful for their care. I'll only trust Dr. Harlan and his staff with my athletic injuries from here on out!

Wonderful experience. Dr. Harlan answered my questions in a very kind and understanding way. My surgery was handled with care and they followed up multiple times to make sure recovery was going as planned. They gave me a T-shirt and did a celebratory dance with me when I graduated recovery.

I've dealt with hip pain and discomfort for years. After normal activities became difficult and painful, I finally decided it was time to see a specialist. My hip issues were clearly explained, as were my treatment options and expected outcomes. After speaking with Dr. Harlan, I didn't feel the need to sleep on it or seek a second opinion - I was comfortable moving forward. My procedure was successful and I only regret not reaching out sooner.
